Primary Purpose

Manages a team of environmental health specialist (EHS) professionals, leading, directing, and reviewing their activities and assignments to accomplish operational plans and results of reducing health and safety risk factors. Consults with and develops team members, drawing from technical expertise and advanced knowledge of regulations to support team members. Evaluates subordinate staff members and uses varying management strategies to affect positive results. Conducts plan review, permits, inspects, evaluates, and enforces compliance with environmental regulations at North Carolina DHHS regulated public facilities which may include investigating complaints or outbreaks of illness.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field


Required Experience

•

Four years of experience in environmental health, environmental planning, inspections or engineering


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)

•

NC relevant authorizations

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills being able to succinctly communicate, market and sell practical EHS & S solutions to all levels of company/business/and facility personnel.

Advanced understanding of EHS regulations, management systems, regulatory agencies, trends and resources. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
