Primary Purpose

Protects citizens and other animals by capturing, transporting, or receiving animals. Removes animals from inhumane or distressing conditions. Arranges for sick or injured animal treatment. Explains laws to animal owners to promote compliance. Investigates complaints and responds to rabies concerns.

Responds to animal control complaints during standard and on-call hours. Communicates with the public about animal welfare and animal control laws and regulations. Issues warnings or citations in connection with animal-related offenses. Investigates complaints regarding animal bites, possible rabies exposure, animal neglect or cruelty. Follows up on complaints appearing to require prosecution or ongoing observation.

Follows up on open calls, writes timely reports of all animal control calls for service including detailed description of events, people and animal findings and outcomes. Documents and photographs attachments for reports as needed.

Ensures compliance with all safety, animal welfare and animal control standards are met based on all assigned trainings and certifications. Maintains all animal control equipment, inventory and vehicles.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

High school diploma or GED


Required Experience

•

One year of experience in animal control or veterinary-related work


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET)  - must pass test/exam within 6 months of employment

•

Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) - must pass test/exam within 6 months of employment

•

Additional licensing requirements may be needed dependent on position

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•

Excellent communication skills to handle frequent citizen contact. Ability to exercise solid judgment, decision making around animal care, protection and achieving live outcomes. Ability to accurately articulate procedures, processes, and regulations to employees and patrons. Ability to handle irate or distressed patrons in a calming manner.

•

Knowledge of North Carolina and Wake County animal related and public health laws, legal codes, court procedures and governmental regulations.

•

Excellent written and verbal communications skills. 

•

Ability to actively look for ways to help people.

•

Ability to monitor/assess the performance of yourself to make improvements and achieve organizational goals.

•

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Word and Outlook.

•

Familiarity with the care and humane handling of shelter animals and wildlife, including dogs, cats, little critters, farm animals, raccoons, foxes and bats.
