Primary Purpose

Provides expertise and leadership in the field of automotive repairs, diagnostics and installations. Works directly with supervisors and other Team Leaders to maintain fleet safety program. Ensures fleet tools and equipment meet standards and that all staff are properly and regularly trained. Assists with mechanical staff training program, both hands-on as well as preparation for certifications and licenses; vehicle dispatching; vehicle maintenance and repairs as well as staff supervision. Assists other Team Leaders with new vehicle emergency equipment installations, surplus decommissioning and daily vehicle emergency equipment repairs. Provides daily maintenance and repairs to vehicles and equipment as assigned. Supports department with various duties as needed. Plans, schedules, and coordinates special project activities as directed. Uses existing knowledge of shop safety requirements to include equipment, tools, repair processes. Requires staff training, certifications and licensing to achieve highest levels of safety requirements. Maintains proper training and certification on all vehicle repairs and equipment used. Works with supervisors, Safety Officer, other Team Leaders and safety consultant to establish and maintain a high level fleet safety program.  Utilizes automotive skills, knowledge and experience to provide maintenance, repairs and  installation of accessory and emergency equipment.

Leads tasks for the maintenance and repairs of vehicles. Repairs vehicles to include the entire spectrum of automotive repairs and maintenance including engine repairs, accessory equipment, etc. Assists in the scheduling and assignment of tasks to staff. Communicates with customers regarding status of repairs. Assists management with vendor repairs. Ensures quality repairs and installations performed by staff.

Maintains ASE Master Tech Certification, NC State Inspection License, forklift/scrubber license and other required training (vehicle and equipment). Assists supervisors with shop training and safety program. Coordinates safety classes and inspections. Maintains training records for staff. Assists with researching available internal and off site training. Researches and recommends training through classes, certifications, re-certifications and testing.

Completes administrative duties to record repair orders, labor hours, material, expenses, and new vehicle on boarding, and vehicle disposition (surplus).  Maintains records of personnel and team activities. Maintains other reports and documents as required by program standards. Assists in the fleet shop, oversees tool and equipment maintenance and occasionally, performs road service calls.

Additional Responsibilities

•

Responds to adverse weather events and emergency response operations as required for essential employees. Cleans up and restores county properties after damage due to natural events, civil protests, or other unplanned events.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

•

Knowledge of work place safety practices and PPE to conform with OSHA requirements.

Ability to lead in a team environment and mentor technicians in the automotive field.

Ability to lead the troubleshooting process in diagnosing complex automotive electronics.

•

Ability to use computers and software applications including the Fleet Management System.

•

Knowledge of automotive mechanical systems, electronics and diagnostics.
