Primary Purpose

Provides landscape maintenance services for Wake County properties by picking up and disposing of litter and debris, mowing grass, edging turf areas, string trimming edges of beds and turf areas adjacent to vertical items such as sign posts and retaining walls, pruning shrubbery, blowing and dispersing dirt and debris, and blowing and collecting leaves. Provides emergency response clean up to damage caused by strong winds or high waters. Works as a member of a three-man landscape crew in a highly mobile and active environment. Operates commercial mowers, blowers, edgers, string trimmers, pruning tools of various types, chain saws, and all common hand tools used in the trade. Operates county vehicles in a safe manner.

 

Essential Functions

Maintains exterior grounds at a wide range of Wake County facilities. Picks up and removes litter and debris from grounds. Mows lawn areas, edges and blows sidewalks, using powered edgers and trimmers. Blows and collects leaves, limbs, and other tree and plant debris. Installs, maintains, and replaces shrubs and other ornamental plantings and ground cover as directed. Maintains lawn and natural areas according to corporate and industry standards. Operates equipment independently, efficiently, and in a safe manner. Participates in special projects related to exterior maintenance as assigned.

Loads and transports equipment and materials to job sites using Wake County vehicles. Hitches trailers to trucks, loads equipment on truck and trailer, and transports to job sites. Maneuvers truck and trailer safely and effectively. Abides by DOT guidelines for hauling commercial equipment, wide loads, and heavy loads.

Performs preventative maintenance on equipment. Follows manufacturer’s guidelines to include: sharpening and replacing cutting blades and heads; replacing filters; changing oil and fluids; replacing drive belts; repairing/replacing tires; greasing and lubricating equipment per manufacturer’s guidelines and maintaining records. Cleans all equipment to include county trucks and trailers. Notifies Supervisor of any damaged or worn equipment.

Maintains records of personal and team activities. Records time worked in the online database (ESS) provided for County employees. Records work tasks completed with required data in the work order management system (Maximo). Maintains other reports and documents as required by program standards.

Additional Responsibilities

•

Responds to adverse weather events and emergency response operations as required for essential employees. Clears and removes precipitation (snow and ice) and debris from facilities after severe weather. Operates snow removal equipment, plow trucks, spreaders, power brooms, blowers, and other commercial equipment. Applies brine, salt, and deicing compounds. Operates hand held power equipment. Utilizes common hand held tools such as snow shovels, brooms, push spreaders, etc. Installs and recovers barricades, cones, and other safety equipment. Cleans up and restores county properties after damage due to natural events, civil protests, or other unplanned events.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Required Education

High school diploma or GED

Ability to operate commercial landscape equipment efficiently, safely, and independently.

Ability to operate hand held power equipment such as chain saws, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and other power equipment.

•

Ability to operate commercial trucks and trailers to include loading equipment, transporting, and off loading.

•

Ability to work in extreme outdoor environments for extended periods of time while performing moderate to heavy work.

•

Knowledge of work place safety practices and PPE to conform with OSHA requirements.

•

Ability to use computers and software applications to record time and material expenses.

•

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.

•

Ability to firmly adhere to codes of conduct and ethical principles.
