Primary Purpose

Conducts field inspections of construction, alteration, or repairs to buildings up to 4 stories and 60,000 square feet (varies by occupancy).  Ensures compliance with the North Carolina Technical Codes to promote public health and safety.  Ensure compliance with any buildings constructed, damaged, renovated, remodeled, moved, or demolished in Wake County's jurisdiction and the municipalities under agreement with the County.

Provides North Carolina Technical Code compliance as mandated by North Carolina General Statute by conducting on-site inspections. Drives to job sites, physically walks through job and checks to see if building systems comply with NC Building Codes.  Completes record of findings in Wake County Inspections System.

Communicates with homeowners, builders, contractors, and others concerning complaints that may be code violations.  Assesses situations and provides solutions pertaining to relevant codes.

Reviews submitted plans (drawings) before permits are issued to correct any items that are contrary to building code requirements and standards.  Plans review must be completed in a timely manner.

Keeps inspector credentials updated with standard courses, testing, and continuing education requirements.

Aligns work and inspections daily so that inspections can be completed efficiently.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

High school diploma or GED


Required Experience

•

Two years of experience in the construction industry


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Standard Level II Code Official Certification required in Building trades within 4 years of hire.


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures.

•

Ability to use computer and smart phone for communication, data entry, and record keeping.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.
