Primary Purpose

Provides documentation, preservation, collection and/or examination of items of physical evidence from any crime scene that is located or initiated within the Wake County jurisdictional area or other areas as commanded by the CCBI Director.  This position will respond to requests for service from any state, local or federal law enforcement agency or the District Attorney. Prepares detailed reports on observations and activities. Testifies in court proceedings regarding findings and processing methods.

 

Essential Functions

•

Locates, documents, preserves, collects and examines items of evidence at crime scenes. Utilizes forensic methods and technology in the recovery of physical evidence from crime scenes.  Confers with requesting agencies and victims regarding ascertaining information necessary to forensic evidence recovery.

Prepares thorough and accurate documentation and reports surrounding observations and activities. Compiles accurate notes and completes all related case documentation.

•

Prepares and utilizes chemical reagents/instrumentation in a laboratory setting to develop and/or collect physical evidence from collected evidence. Practices safety procedures and practices in the lab environment. Packages evidence in a manner to preserve evidence and minimize degradation. Submits evidence appropriately for further analysis.

•

Testifies as an expert witness in state and federal court based on credentials and experience. Communicates crime scene findings, methods of processing, evidence collection methods, evidence packaging methods, evidence storage methods and chain of custody to a jury. Maintains a professional reputation and character that allows for continued effective courtroom testimony. Seeks out and participates in continued education opportunities relevant to crime scene investigation.  Obtains and maintains professional forensic certification.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural or Forensic Science, Criminal Justice or related field

Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

IAI Crime Scene Certification required within 1 year of eligibility - Must maintain current certification thereafter
