Primary Purpose

Coordinates and oversees the fire service delivery system of Wake County to include 19 contract agencies with approximately 400 career staff, 800 volunteer members and an annual budget of +$23 Million. Acts as the liaison between the county and contracting fire departments and provides staff support to the Wake County Fire Commission. Provides representation to county management and the Wake County Board of Commissioners. Directs the internal activities of the Fire Services department which includes Fire Prevention, Fire Training, Fire Operations and Emergency Management.

Develops and monitors the Fire Services $23 million budget to include the Wake County Fire Tax District. Tracks revenues and expenditures, evaluates program effectiveness and recommends new programs with sufficient supporting documentation.

Directs and monitors the activities of the Fire Services department including Fire Prevention, Fire Training, Fire Operations and Emergency Management.

Develops, implements and monitors fire service work plan initiatives which support the Wake County Board of Commissioners goals, County Manager directives and Fire Commission initiatives. Coordinates plans with other departments, outside agencies and other boards and commissions as necessary.

Serves as a liaison between fire service contract agencies and support service agency providers which are necessary for accomplishing the routine, daily service delivery to Wake County citizens. Examples of these support service providers are Raleigh Wake Emergency Communications Center, Wake Emergency Communications Organization, Wake County GIS, Wake County Radio Administrator, Wake County Finance and Purchasing office, Wake County Budget Office and Office of State Fire Marshal.

Responds to significant events and major emergencies to assist contract fire agencies and allied emergency service providers.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's degree in Fire Prevention, Fire Science or related field


Required Experience

•

Eight years of experience in fire service, including at least four years of supervisory experience

Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Certification through the National Fire Academy as an Executive Fire Officer or Center for Public Excellence's Chief Fire Officer.
