Primary Purpose

Assists health care providers, nursing staff and administrative support staff in the delivery of quality patient care and public health services in clinic and/or community setting as delegated by a Registered Nurse or a Nurse Practitioner.

 

Essential Functions

Collects client data by using standardized tools and procedures as delegated by a Registered Nurse (RN).  Observes clients to detect physical and behavioral signs and symptoms that may require medical attention. Documents client data and reports client observations to providers and/or nurse. Reviews and compares objective client data (ex. lab test results) to nurse delegated standing medical orders to determine appropriate course of action. Creates positive team approach to meet work area demands.

Assists in provision of client health care as delegated by a RN. Performs technical tasks and implements plan of care. Sets up treatment or testing equipment, positions or holds client for medical procedure, and/or treatments performs simple treatments as delegated by a RN. Administers immunizations and medications as delegated by RN following appropriate order, schedule and technique. Collects, processes and transports specimens, laboratory items, or pharmacy items, ensuring proper documentation and delivery to authorized personnel.

Provides information and answers routine questions of clients and or family members according to established standards regarding their medical care and preventive health maintenance topics such as diet, weight, smoking and topics related to medical specialty. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing culturally sensitive emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to clients, friends, and families. Inquires client regarding socioeconomic needs and provides resource information.

Documents client health care services in electronic and/or paper client and department records. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. Participates in quality monitoring thru the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a periodic basis to assure quality care.

Protects clients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and privacy regulations. Maintains safe and clean working environment; cleans and sanitizes examination rooms, medical equipment or other patient care areas. Maintains adequate inventory of medical supplies.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 


Additional Responsibilities

•

Ensures own knowledge and understanding of the state, county and public health regulations and policies governing certified medical assistant scope of practice in relevant specialty areas. Obtains required continuing education, periodic competency and skills review and RN validation, maintains required current licensure and certifications.

•

Additional duties as assigned to meet work area goals, Wake County Human Services (WCHS) and Wake County goals.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

High school diploma or GED


Required Experience

•

Six months of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

CPR, CMA Certificate; successful completion of a medical assistant training program through an accredited school recognized by the United States Department Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or equivalent medical assistant certification through on the job training and preceptorship by a RN and successful completion of the certification exam.

•

Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to screen and test human health status and perform delegated routine technical nursing tasks.

Demonstrates knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Word, email and electronic health records.

•
