Primary Purpose

The Disease Intervention - Social Worker conducts epidemiological investigations of sexually transmitted disease in Wake County, with priority given to HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. The job completes disease intervention activities per established county, state, and federal policies and procedures.

 

Essential Functions

Conducts field investigations and personal interview, reviews records of clients infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection (HIV), Syphilis, and possibly gonorrhea and chlamydia. Uses investigative methods to locate infected persons' contacts. Explains disease-related information and public health legal requirements to clients, including risk reduction education. Reviews contact tracing and partner notification options and provides support for ensuring partners are notified appropriate.

Manages Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) caseload in North Carolina Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NCEDSS) database. Ensures data quality, effective electronic communication between county and state HIV/STD staff and timely reporting of cases in NCEDSS. Manages patient/client electronic medical records within the Wake County Human Services General Electric Centricity Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System.

Provides Internal and External Consultation on STD's. Provides technical assistance and consultation to Wake County

Human Services' clinical staff, community physician, hospitals and medical personnel on communicable disease laws and rules and Center of Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.  Provides internal and external consultation regarding STD treatment protocols, specimen collection, quality control and interpretation of serology results. Assists with outreach and education sessions with other agencies/clinics, which could include taking blood/urine samples. Provides in-services to outside providers and staff to educate on CDC guidelines, reporting rules and timelines as well as changes in treatments, etc. Places more efforts on local hospital emergency room to increase proper testing and treatment of HIV and Syphilis.

Collaborates with other Public Health Areas, ( HIV Outreach, STD Clinic) on strategies and projects to decrease the STD numbers.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 


Additional Responsibilities

•

Maintains educational expertise, and CDC guidelines for changes in treatment therapies for STD's.  Attends annual local Disease Intervention Specialist Conference and/or National conferences or other trainings that are available.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
