Primary Purpose

Provides public messaging, education, and community outreach to the residents and visitors to Wake County. Works with the Communication Office to establish and maintain relationships with media outlets and assists the department with media inquiries about the EMS system and requests for public information. Develops curriculums and materials for various programs and public outreach events. Oversees and maintains the departmental website and helps with the department's social media presence. Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with individuals and groups, including internal and external partners, subordinates, supervisors, and residents from all education levels, cultural backgrounds, belief structures, and health states. Serves in a highly visible position in the community and must act with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, respect, and always with the mission statement of prompt, compassionate, and clinically excellent care in mind.

 

Essential Functions

Establishes and maintains relationships with community leaders including political, civic, faith based and corporate to evaluate and develop community outreach and public education programs based on alignment with shared goals, effectiveness and feasibility. Develops curriculums, materials, online education materials, and presentations designed to educate the public on public safety, community health, wellness, etc. Coordinates the deployment of personnel and equipment for various community outreach and public education programs.

Develops and oversees various youth programs such as the EMS Club, EMS Cadets and EMS Summer Camp.

Develops and oversees various community programs such as the EMS Citizens Academy and EMS Code Celebrate!

Develops and manages the EMS Employee Recognition Program.

•

Establishes and maintains relationships with media outlets. Drafts public releases and works with county Public Information Officer. Assists with departmental media relations. Provides information to the media about EMS System activities and programs. Conducts on camera interviews, provide tours and gives presentations to the media.

Assists with departmental social media accounts. Develops social media content such as but not limited to recruitment imaging, community outreach, and public service announcements.

Collects data and develops reports to show effectiveness of public education and community outreach programs.  Develops and presents white papers and presentations. Schedules and runs meetings. Communicates in both written and oral form with internal and external partners as well as stakeholders and program participants.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 


Additional Responsibilities

•

Leads and participates in required meetings and training.

•

Leads and participates in various department specific committees regarding decisions on protocols, equipment, vehicles, uniforms, etc.

•

Staffs the Emergency Operations Center.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
