Primary Purpose

Promotes and ensures the quality and safety of nursing services provided to clients and families. Provides leadership and direct supervision of public health nurses and paraprofessionals, participates in program planning and operational functions as assigned by the Program Manager and provides direct nursing care to clients.

Provides leadership, guidance, work assignment and supervision for the work unit nursing services staff. Applies competent clinical knowledge and uses independent nursing judgment for client care provided by self and by nursing services staff to achieve quality patient care outcomes.

Develops, implements, or evaluates standards of nursing practice in specialty area such as communicable diseases, substance dependencies, pediatrics, prenatal and family planning. Collaborates with the Medical Director, Public Health Director and/or Nursing Director to develop and/or revise policies, procedures, and protocols which guide the delivery of care to clients in the community.

Assesses the competency of nursing staff and paraprofessionals initially and periodically according to agency standards. Identifies training needs and arranges or conducts training sessions for staff development. Conducts periodic job performance reviews for all nursing services staff.

Provides consultation to other health care providers in areas such as changes in nursing practices, clinical procedures, client referrals and follow-up, community and agency resources for clients. Reads current literature, collaborates with colleagues, and/or participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing. Participates in assigned meetings representing work area or nursing profession.

Collaborates with Program Manager to ensure proper maintenance of adequate nursing supplies inventory and equipment, safe working environment that protects client privacy, compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and periodic quality assessment and improvement initiatives. Provides information and suggestions related to budget planning to the program manager.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 


Additional Responsibilities

•

Ensures own knowledge and understanding of the state and county regulations governing nursing practice and relevant specialty areas. Obtains required continuing professional education and maintains required current licensure and certifications.

•

Participates in public health accreditation benchmark monitoring and completion.

•

Additional duties as assigned to meet work area goals, Wake County and Human Services goals.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
