Primary Purpose

Working a rotating 12 hour shift is required. Assures the sick and injured citizens of and visitors to Wake County receive prompt, compassionate, and clinically excellent out of hospital emergency medical care in a highly reliable, efficient, and professional manner with a specific focus on the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of emergency medical services personnel at all credential levels. Provides direct field observation, management, and evaluation of probationary employees and employees needing remedial work, delivers training material through small group and one-on-one sessions, with occasional teaching in large group/classroom settings. Rides on an ambulance with an expectation to both perform the duties of a paramedic and teach the duties of an emergency medical technician at all credential levels which may include teaching the operation of emergency vehicles, biomedical equipment, and other equipment necessary to provide patient and situational assessment, treatment and transport in an emergency setting as well as performing routine cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment. Interacts and communicates with individuals and groups of individuals (patients, the public, members of our agency, other agencies, and departments) from all education levels, cultural backgrounds, belief structures, and states of health. Serves in a highly visible position in the community and, as such, the incumbent is required to act with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, and respect and always with the best interest of the welfare of the patient and the public in mind.

Working a rotating 12 hour shift is required. Maintains a high level of knowledge and proficiency of both operational and clinical procedures, skills and standards. Uses different presentation techniques to provide education to adult learners both in large and small groups and one-on-one sessions. Communicates in both written and verbal methods to a diverse group of employees. Utilizes and trains others in the use of equipment and biomedical supplies used during patient care such as, Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillator, Peripheral Intravenous Catheters, Intraosseous Devices, Pulse Oximeters, Waveform Capnometers, Sphygmomanometers, Multiple Spinal and Extremity Immobilization Devices, Multiple Airway Devices, Respirators, CPAP units, Medications, Assorted Bandages, and other Biomedical Equipment. Utilizes and trains others in the use of non-patient care technology such as, in-vehicle navigation, laptop computers, computer aided dispatch, pagers, radios (handheld and truck mounted), cell phones, online education portals, high-fidelity simulators, etc.

Evaluates employee performance through direct observation and review of clinical and operational performance reports, drafts employee evaluations, and plans and conducts effective meetings related to employee performance. Develops employee goals/expectations and assists employees with implementation of these goals and/or achieving these expectations. Coordinates with the Division of Professional Development, FTEP Coordinator and others in the evaluation and management of new employees or employees being remediated. Acts as a mediator. Interprets and enforces policies, protocols, and work standards.

Completes daily operational tasks, responds to requests for service and trains others to do the same. Maintains personal readiness to be able to respond, within the 90 second standard, in a prompt, compassionate and clinically excellent manner to requests for service whenever and wherever needed to include all times of day and night and in all types of weather. Assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury by obtaining relevant information from the patient, their family or caretaker(s), bystanders/citizens and from the surrounding environment. Performs basic and advanced life support skills utilizing liberal standing order protocols to guide patient care in the prehospital setting. Lifts and carries equipment, stretchers and patients to facilitate response to, treatment and transport of patients. Completes documentation through patient care reporting systems, electronic and paper-based logs, reporting software and databases. Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive data at all times, in accordance with HIPAA laws, organizational and department policies and procedures. Maintains, cleanliness of equipment, vehicles and facilities, regularly inventories and restocks equipment and vehicles, decontaminates and disinfects equipment and vehicles after every patient encounter. Operates an emergency vehicle in a safe and respectful manner in emergency mode (lights and sirens) and in non-emergency mode during all hours of the day and night, in all types of traffic and weather conditions.  Works effectively as an individual and as a team leader on every patient care scene. Adapts, problem solves and multi-tasks in ever changing and sometimes distracting environments. Communicates during routine to significantly stressful situations and everything in-between in a respectful manner, through written, oral and/or visual means, with all individuals and groups of individuals, regardless of their age, gender, educational level, socioeconomic status, etc.

Participates in a variety of committees and projects to include but not limited to simulations, FTEP committee, and assessment centers. Communicates in both written and verbal methods, effectively listens, thinks analytically to anticipate potential issues and then develops both short- and long-term solutions to mitigate the issues.

Functions effectively in a physically demanding environment, requiring strength, flexibility and endurance. Wears personal protective equipment such as turnout gear, chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection when needed.

Additional Responsibilities

Participates in various community outreach and public education events.

•

Participates in various department specific committees regarding decisions on protocols, equipment, vehicles, uniforms, etc.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Associate's degree or equivalent in Emergency Medical Services or related field


Required Experience

•

Three years of experience working as a Paramedic including one year of experience as a medically cleared Paramedic in the Wake County EMS system


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

Certification as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMTP)

•

Completion of a Field Training or Preceptor/Adult Learning Course

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted
