Responsible for working collaboratively with other members to ensure the safe and accurate delivery of patient care. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement and equipment maintenance. | | | | | | | | |
Essential Functions | | | Priority | % Time | • | Works as a phlebotomy technician, obtaining venous and capillary blood specimens from adults and children using knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique, and phlebotomy material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, and lancet) and urine specimen collection. | 1 | 50% | • | Ensures proper identification of patients as shown on physician forms. Clearly labels specimens after drawing with patient's name, identification number (SSN with FM P, DOB), phlebotomist's initials, and/or phlebotomist's signature and date as required. Follows universal precautions, and infection control guidelines in the performance of all phlebotomies, to include gloving, disposal of needles and contaminated waste, and patient isolation requirements. | 2 | 15% | • | Logs in specimens received into LIS. Create Specimen tracking lists. | 3 | 15% | • | Trains employees (laboratory, nursing staff and medical laboratory technician students) on venipuncture, capillary puncture, bleeding times, etc. Insures that standard operating procedures for the assigned section are followed and kept current | 4 | 10% | • | Assists the receptionist in accessing and scheduling patients and in providing instructions for testing (i.e. clean catch urines, GTT's, 24 hour urines, etc.) | 5 | 5% | • | Contacts the medical in handling patients in cases of fainting, convulsions, and illness. | 6 | 5% | | | | | | | |

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | • | Ability to perform phlebotomy based on knowledge of standardized approved procedures and techniques on patients ranging from ambulatory to critically ill onwards, with ability to use approved deviations from standard techniques to draw difficult patients. | • | Ability to follow Standing Operating Procedures regarding tube types and specimen amounts. | • | Ability to use various types of phlebotomy equipment (e.g., syringes, butterflies, vacutainer system). | • | Ability to follow verbal instructions regarding noncomplex procedures | • | Knowledge of the type tube and amount of specimen required in accordance with test requested; knowledge as to which laboratory performs which tests in order to properly route the collected specimen. | | | |
