Primary Purpose

Performs professional medical work providing direct patient care including the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Employees serve in a variety of medical roles including primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics or OB/GYN. Manages all patients and conditions within their scope of responsibility. Serves scheduled patients as well as walk-ins and add-ons. Performs telephone consultation and administrative tasks associated with the administration of medical care. Participates in quality improvement activities. Medically supervises advance practice providers, nurses and other staff on the care management team.

Performs initial and periodic exams and assessments. Discusses/obtains history and background. Diagnoses and treats illnesses and diseases. Orders and obtains testing, labs, and x-rays as indicated. Delivers or supervises treatment. Completes all associated documentation within the electronic health record based on established guidelines.

Reviews findings on chart and discusses with provider, offers recommendations or changes to plan. Provides specific exams or medical follow-ups. Assists with diagnosis and treatments.

Prescribes medications. Orders testing and labs. Follows up with patients and/or family. Discusses plan with team members. Refers patients to specialists as needed.

•

Attends team meetings and patient conferences. Participates in discussions of Best Practice recommendations. Maintains licensure and certification requirements. Keeps abreast of new protocols, procedures and practices through journals, workshops, and self-study. Maintains CPR, PALS, OSHA certifications. Obtains 8 hours per year customer service and cultural diversity training.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

Doctorate in Medicine


Required Experience

•

Three years of experience and must have completed appropriate residency


Required Licenses and Certifications

NC Medical Board licensure

•

Medical license/certification in specialist field

•

DEA registration

•

Hospital credentialing or eligibility

•

Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of general, preventive medicine and of the techniques involved.

•

Skill in assessing, treating and diagnosing a variety of diseases and injuries in the practice of an applicable specialty of medicine

•

Ability to assess and interpret laboratory results, clinical data and information relative to the patient’s condition.

•

Critical thinking skills and interpersonal skills to build effective partnering relationships with other physicians, physician extenders, nurses and other staff. Ablility to present ideas and concepts effectively. Ability to work independently in a time oriented environment. Ability to analyze problems and issues from a variety of perspectives and understand the legal, reimbursement and impact.

Ability to compile clear and concise notes for patient's charts and to make oral presentations of cases in medical conferences

•

Ability to supervise and guide work performance of residents and mid-level practitioners.
