Primary Purpose

Serves as clinical health specialty professional working with medically complex students. Provides consultation to  the Wake County Human Services (WCHS) school health services team. Serves as liaison between the WCHS school health program and Wake County Public School System Special Education Services. .  Assists with Emergency Shelter staffing and community events related to public health outbreaks or concerns.

Provides specialty health expertise to school nurses, nurse supervisors, and school health program manager.  Improves procedural processes, obtains approvals, and remains abreast of new developments and policy requirements as related to specialty area such as diabetes or asthma.  Creates prevention plans to minimize health risks at school.  Works to achieve an optimal health state for each student by identifying and evaluating school health needs and policies.

Serves as school health nurse liaison between WCHS School Health Program and  WCPSS health services and WCPSS special education services.  Provides training on handling routine and urgent medical problems for educational staff, special education transportation services and/or preschool services.

Provides ongoing staff development including orientation, competency testing and training consistent with individual and program needs, goals, and objectives.

Provides direct nursing services to assigned schools.

Participates in meetings, in-service trainings, and staff development events.

Additional Responsibilities

•

Ensures own knowledge and understanding of the state and county regulations governing nursing practice and relevant specialty areas.  Obtains required continuing professional education and maintains required current licensures and certifications.

Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
