Primary Purpose

Provide telecommunications technical support including installing, moving, changing and troubleshooting hardware, software, features, voice/data wiring and related infrastructure.  Assist with creating and maintaining specifications for voice/data infrastructure including cabling, patch panels, racks, cable management and data closets.  Install, test and maintain data cable and equipment for small scale projects and participate in large infrastructure projects by providing input on requirements, selecting contractors and managing projects through to completion.  Maintain and apply a current knowledge of industry standards to ensure reliable service delivery. Train end users on telecom hardware and features to ensure technology adoption.

 

Essential Functions

•

Perform telecommunications support for Wake County employees, facilities and partners including moves, adds and changes.  Install hardware including phones, headsets and other peripherals, test features upon delivery and train end users.

Troubleshoot and resolve telecommunications infrastructure, service and feature issues to ensure high availability.

•

Design, install, manage, troubleshoot, repair and remove voice and data wiring, patch panels, racks and related infrastructure.  Procure all materials needed for each job and provide the appropriate budget code for materials and labor.

•

Provide consultation and input on wiring specifications, material estimation and vendor selection for wiring-related projects. Facilitate vendor walk-throughs and overview scope of work prior to bid submission.  Coordinate contracted work with Wake County construction services, oversee vendor progress and review/approve wiring contract services invoices.

•

Participate in the development and maintenance of current standards for voice/data wiring and telecommunications hardware.

•

Attend technical classes or seminars as required.  Perform activities and take classes required to maintain BICSI certification. Maintain a level of knowledge that is current with telecommunications and cabling technology. Be involved in the use or evaluation of new technology.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field


Required Experience

•

Three years of experience in Telecom voice and data wiring


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted


Preferred Licenses and Certifications


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•

Knowledge and ability to apply telecommunications infrastructure best practices.

•

Broad knowledge of telecommunications hardware and features.

•

General knowledge of network services, especially as related to voice services delivery.

•

Ability to troubleshoot voice/data services connectivity and feature issues.

•

Excellent customer services & support skills, and ability to train customer to foster adoption of technology.
