Primary Purpose

Manage the daily activities of GIS staff and serve as a member of the GIS Leadership Team in order to carry out the mission, vision, goals and services of the GIS division. Interact and engage with various GIS stakeholders to help support Public Safety emergency response operations, maintain the integrity of the GIS platform, support the citizens of Wake County and inform geography-based, data driven decisions.

•

Administration & Management:  Supervise team members and/or project teams, ensuring performance management, professional development and successful GIS operations. Active participation in Leadership Team activities including but not limited to: strategic and tactical planning, budget preparation, vendor, contract and expense management and performance measurement/monitoring/reporting.

Emergency Response & Support Liaison:  Serve as lead/coordinator for activities and (internal/external) entities involving the Wake County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center.

Geographic Data Management: Update and maintain GIS data layers and/or databases. Lead and/or facilitate quality control practices to ensure the accuracy of GIS data.

Customer Service: Respond to (internal/external) customer requests, troubleshoot problems and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner.

Consultative Special Projects & Support: Serve as project lead, project manager and/or resource for GIS projects that are initiated by the public, county employees, municipalities and/or other partners. Participate in full development cycle including but not limited to: requirements gathering, business and geospatial analysis, design, development, testing, training and maintenance.

Intra/Intergovernmental Relations: Partner with county departments, local, state or national governmental entities and stakeholders, to participate in governance groups, committees, initiatives etc. that support and contribute to the advancement of Wake County GIS operations.

Training & Professional Development: Follow GIS and IT standards, policies and procedures in the management of the GIS platform. Enhance personal proficiency and knowledge of GIS, county information systems and related technologies. Stay current with GIS industry trends/expertise and explore ways to effectively apply knowledge, skills and abilities to the work of Wake County government.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems or related field


Required Experience

•

Four years of experience in geographic information systems


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted
