Primary Purpose

Library Assistants work either in a public-facing position at a Regional, Community, or Special Library; or in a System Services role in Collection Development Services and Library Awareness.

 

The primary purpose of the Library Assistant is to:

• Provide external or internal customer service;

• Assist the Library Manager with library operations;

• Under the direction of a Librarian, assist with or present programs to adults and children

• Provide assistance to the Selection Manager and Selectors for the ordering, receiving and distribution of library materials

• Work with the Senior Librarians in Library Awareness to create and distribute public relations materials, as well as maintain social media and patron feedback forums such as Facebook and AskWCPL

 

Essential Functions

Customer Service: Staff customer service desks and respond to patron requests;  Instruct patrons in using computers and online databases; Check materials in and out; Process patron requests; Assist patrons with circulation functions; Assist with library equipment; Respond to needs of managers and staff as it pertains to Collections or Library Awareness.

Library Operations Support: Assist with maintaining library facility; Assist with scheduling and testing of Pages; Assist with scheduling and directing Library Ambassadors; Coordinate the ordering of office supplies; Help conduct quarterly fire drills.

Program Support: Work under the direction of a Librarian to deliver programs to children and adults (ex. storytimes, school age programs, craft programs); provide Reference and Readers' Advisory help to patrons;  assist with the maintenance and marketing of book collections, including creating displays and using reports to deselect materials; Assist Selectors with building lists and ordering materials to support library programming.

Collection Development Support: Work with Selection Librarians to create lists for new and retrospective book orders; Create reports for redistribution or deselection of materials.

Library Awareness Support: Work with Senior Librarians to create PR materials to promote library programs and services; Assist with maintaining social media sites; Assist with maintaing online patron feedback forums, ex. AskWCPL.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
