Primary Purpose

The Library Director is the highest authority in the Library Division (WCPL) and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to accomplish the goals and objectives of the County, Community Services and WCPL.  The employee is also responsible for leading, planning, organizing, maintaining and directing the facilities and services of the library system. The Director provides vision and strategic direction for WCPL working closely with the Community Services Director.  This work frequently includes local municipalities, County Administration, and the Board of Commissioners.  The Library Director is the liaison with library organizations throughout the state including the NC State Library.

Lead Efforts with Strategic and Long Range Planning, Budget and CIP for Libraries: Work with Library Assistant Director, Community Services Administration and Senior Library Managers to prepare strategic and long-range plans to make Wake County Public Libraries successful and relevant to Wake County citizens; Participate in annual budget preparations; Participate in CIP discussions and planning.

Serve as Liaison to County Senior Leadership, Library Commission, and NC Library Organizations; Attend County Extended Leadership Team meetings; Communicate relevant information to Library Administrative Team; Attend monthly Library Commission meetings to share relevant information; Serve as primary contact with State Library of NC; Participate in NC Public Library Director's Association.

Supervise Library Assistant Director (Deputy Library Director) and six Senior Library Managers. Meet regularly with direct reports to set goals and to offer coaching, mentoring and feedback; Complete performance reviews; Complete administrative tasks related to supervision, including procurement card purchases, and reviewing mileage reimbursements.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Master's degree in Librarianship or related field: MLS, MLIS, MIS, ML from an ALA accredited program or NC program


Required Experience

•

Six years of experience in a library setting with management responsibilities


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

NC Public Librarian Certification


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted
