Primary Purpose

Serves as Attorney to the Board of Commissioners and Head of In-House Counsel and Risk Management for Wake County. Provides superior legal representation of all Wake County agencies and departments. Utilizes substantive practical legal experience, institutional knowledge of county ordinances and administrative policies and procedures. Remains current on municipal and county law developments. Performs general ligation, tort defense, appellate work, risk management and general local government law practice.

Provides direct representation of the Board of Commissioners. Represents the county in legal proceedings at all levels of federal and state courts as required including but not limited to general litigation, tort defense, risk management, contract negotiation/review, appellate work and other legal issues. Prepares cases, consults with employees, reviews written documentation and appears in court.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Civil, superior and district court ligation knowledge and the ability to perform high-level contact review and use advanced negotiation skills.
