Primary Purpose

Works under general supervision to investigate, analyze and determine the extent Wake County's liability involving accidents, incidents or other occurrences involving county property, vehicles or employees resulting in third-party personal injury or property damage. Negotiates and prepares claims and settlements in accordance with the Wake County Board of Commissioners Resolution Regarding Limited Waiver of Immunity and North Carolina General Statutes.

 

Essential Functions

Performs reviews, investigations, claims adjusting, negotiation and payment of county claims within all lines of business.  Directs the assignment of claims to third-party administrators and adjusting companies. Monitors and oversees claims progress to ensue that liability and workers' compensation claims against the county are handled promptly and efficiently, ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulation.

Ensures the county's loss data is correctly recorded and accurately analyzed to support the County Attorney's risk management/claims decision process. Researches issues and potential exposures to set accurate claim reserves. Oversees invoices and payment of invoices. Posts claim cost accurately in the county claims system. Analyzes and recognizes factors and conditions affecting claims cost and responds with appropriate actions.

Coordinates and meets with Attorneys, claims adjusters and department heads to review claims and develop strategies to reduce exposures and monitor claims handling. Prepares and produces documents for audit requests and meets with auditors. Sends notices and updates to excess carriers in accordance with the terms and conditions of insurance policies and contracts.

Communicates and collaborates with multiple departments within the county including but not limited to GSA Fleet Services for automobile damage repairs, GSA Physical Plant and Field Services for county property claims and GSA Safety and Security for claims investigation and OSHA.

Maintains confidential records and information required by OSHA. Ensures compliance with all statutory/regulatory insurance and claims-handling requirements such as OSHA 29 CFR 1904.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management or related field


Required Experience

•

Two years of experience in claims management or claims adjustment


Qualification Equivalency

Equivalent education and experience are accepted
