Primary Purpose

Provides superior legal representation of all Wake County agencies and departments as assigned by the County Attorney including general ligation, appellate work, risk management and general local government law practice. Provides informed advice and counsel to numerous and diverse county employees.

 

Essential Functions

•

Represents the county in legal proceedings at all levels of federal and state courts as required including but not limited to general litigation, risk management, contract negotiation/review, appellate work and other legal issues. Prepares cases, consults with employees, reviews written documentation and appears in court.

Prepares notices, motions, petitions, complaints and orders. Manages the distribution of decisions and consults with opposing attorneys consulting attorneys, staff and outside agency representatives.

•

Acts as a liaison between county departments, the courts, court personnel, judges, and attorneys in representations. Communicates with external parties, senior staff and elected officials.

•

Maintains records of all actions and cases. Ensures that documents are processed and reviewed for legal compliance and grammatical content.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

Juris Doctorate from an accredited school of law


Required Experience

•

Five years of experience as a practicing attorney
