Primary Purpose

Provides supervision and control of the inmates during their booking, identification, confinement, recreation, visitation, release and all other aspects of incarceration within the Wake County Detention Facilities. Submits and attends classes for Transport, Field Training Officer and Critical Response Team.

 

 

Essential Functions

Monitors conduct of prisoners in the housing unit or during work or recreational activities according to established policies, regulations and procedures to prevent escape or violence.

Takes actions to subdue and gain control of any unruly inmate using force if necessary and by using handcuffs and other restraints.

Exercises independent judgement in determining where there is a violation of security occurring requiring the officer to gain control of the inmate and determine when force may be used and to what degree.

Communicates effectively and coherently over mobile two way radios while initiating and responding to radio communication.

Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of inmates and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.

Prepares incidents and other reports using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations.

Additional Responsibilities

•

Conducts visual and audio surveillance for an extended period of time while performing cell checks on inmates.

•

Transports inmates from jail to courts, schools, hospital and other prison and jail facilities.

•

Assists in the training of new officers.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Knowledge and Experience

Requires basic law enforcement training certification; in-service training and completion of field training within one year of employment is required.  Firearms certification must be obtained within one year of employment.


Qualifications


Required Education

High school diploma or GED


Required Experience

•

Three years of experience in detention services


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

DOCC certification

•

Completion of the Annual In-Service training


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Knowledge of appropriate procedures for collecting and reviewing information and the ability to monitor or regulate those procedures, tasks, or activities.
