Primary Purpose

Provide a safe, enjoyable park experience through daily operational tasks, visitor services, resource stewardship, and park programming and maintenance. Assists the Park Manager in all aspects of park functions including planning, budgeting, and facility assessments. The Assistant Park Manager (APM) may have a focus area of either education or maintenance, however, they are also responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating full-time and part-time staff as well as recruiting, directing, and recognizing volunteers.  The APM's duties include sharing daily tasks such as opening/closing responsibilities and coverage of weekend and evening shifts. They serve as the manager on duty in the absence of the Park Manager.

 

General duties for these focus areas are listed below:

 

Maintenance

Directing all aspects of general maintenance tasks including turf care, landscape and trail maintenance, building care, and custodial functions. Supervising and conducting preventative maintenance on buildings, equipment, facilities, and utility vehicles.  Managing natural resources.  Maintenance duties also include training employees on best practices for park safety and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

Education

Coordinating and implementing a wide variety of program opportunities and ensures the programs are curriculum based and of the highest quality. Managing all aspects of programming including planning, budgeting, marketing, implementation, and evaluation. Programs vary in complexity from one-hour programs to camps, special events, and adult workshops. Supervising reservations and payments, developing exhibits, and maintaining gardens.

Administrative - Planning, scheduling and writing up park events and public educational programs on a quarterly basis.  Meetings with internal and external stakeholders. Recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating full-time and part-time employees. Manage office functions such as; e-mail, filing, making/answering phone inquiries, purchasing supplies, submitting monthly reports.  Facility reservations.  Updating park literature.

Operations -   Open and closing of the park and its facilities.  Enforce all park rules and regulations in a calm, firm and professional manner without commissioned law enforcement powers.  Maintain annual certifications in CPR and basic first-aid.  Monitor safety practices and procedures of employees.  Respond to fire and trouble alerts.  Systematic inspection of facilities and their components and documentation of these inspections.  Recognize situations requiring the assistance of emergency, fire, law enforcement or wildlife authorities and request assistance when needed, represent Wake County until higher authority arrives.  Provide helpful and concise information and assistance directly to park visitors in any manner possible.  Convey a professional appearance at all times by wearing the approved uniform to established standards.

Park Programming -   Developing, planning, and leading or overseeing educational programs for park visitors of all ages in both classroom and outdoor settings.  Gathering or developing educational equipment and natural history props for use in park educational programs.  Planning, obtaining, or facilitating educational staff development and educator workshops.

Facility and Landscape Maintenance -  

 

Supervise and/or participate in landscape maintenance duties involving turf and landscape management including the control of noxious pests and exotic plant species within park. Monitor conditions of all park resources and amenities. 

 

Directly responsible for preventative maintenance procedures and repair of equipment.  Recognize situations requiring the assistance of skilled mechanics and technicians outside park staff, schedule, deliver and pick-up for service all equipment as needed.  Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and janitorial practices are needed.

 

Responsible for placing, monitoring and clearing General Services Administration work orders and assisting General Services.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's degree in Parks, History, Parks Administration or related field


Required Experience

•

Two years of experience in parks management or parks supervision


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

Depending on area of employment, Pesticide Applicator's License may be required after initial hire

•

Depending on area of employment, Playground Inspector Certification may be required after initial hire

•

Depending on area of employment, CPR certification may be required after initial hire
