Primary Purpose

Provides a safe, enjoyable park experience by assisting with visitor services, the shared daily operational tasks, resource stewardship and they supervise part-time staff and volunteers. There are two main focus areas for the technician position: Park Maintenance and Park Programming.

 

Supports the Assistant Park Manager with coordinating and implementing a wide variety of program opportunities and ensuring the programs are curriculum based and of the highest quality. Involved with all aspects of programming including planning, marketing, implementation, and evaluation. Programs vary in complexity from one-hour programs to camps, special events, and adult workshops.  Handles reservations, develops exhibits, and maintains gardens.

 

Supports the Assistant Park Manager with coordinating and implementing a wide variety of maintenance and operational functions at a high standard. Performs general maintenance tasks including turf care, landscape and trail maintenance, building care, and facility cleanup. Conducts preventative maintenance on buildings, equipment, and utility vehicles.

Programming: Assists in development, planning and scheduling of park events and public programs for park visitors of all ages in both classroom and outdoor settings. Recommends and maintains programming supplies.

Administration: Helps to manage the facility and program reservations/registrations, payments, and refunds. Responds to inquiries by phone and e-mail and handles customer concerns. The Park Technicians will greet  visitors and maintain positive public relations at the front desk. They may assist in the initiation of marketing and other social/digital media endeavors. The Technicians will also provide supervision of temporary staff and volunteers when serving as a "Manager on duty" or as assigned by Park management. They also will perform office tasks such as working on computer-- e-mail, filing/information storage, and purchasing supplies as needed.

Operations - Includes opening and closing of park facilities, custodial tasks, and other shared park duties. Ensures visitor/employee safety, including enforcement of park rules and regulations.  Enhances public relations through visitor contact while in the park, representing primary park(s), Wake County Parks, Recreation & Open Space and Wake County Government.

Maintenance -Performs building and grounds maintenance and facility set-up. Provides assistance for special events/meetings, both on-site and off. Performs landscape maintenance duties involving seeding, planting, pruning, mulching, etc.  Performs turf maintenance including mowing, fertilizing, herbicide application, and aeration of turf areas.  Works with contractors and inspects and maintains the park’s amenities including picnic tables, benches, water fountains, etc.  Assists in light construction projects including trails, bridges, steps, erosion control measures.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

High school diploma or GED


Required Experience

•

One year of experience working in a park setting, providing educational programming, maintaining facilities or landscaping


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

•

CPR certification within one year of employment


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted
