Primary Purpose

Veteran Service Officers assist veterans, veteran spouses, and their dependents identify and apply for benefits earned through their military service.  Benefits include, but are not limited to, disability compensation, pension, medical assistance, education scholarships, burial, and/or transportation assistance.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 


Additional Responsibilities

•

Assist veterans and veteran families answer basic questions over the phone and/or email, working the VSO front desk, and/or assisting the Customer Services Representative with administrative duties.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree

One year of experience working with military or veterans’ services


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted


Preferred Licenses and Certifications

•

State mandated Veteran's Services Offier certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•

Ability to assimilate information, decide, and recommend the best course of action for each individual case. The officer is also required to facilitate the request through the state NCDVA and federal VA offices.

•

Strong relationship building skills 

•

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in local language 

•

Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.

•

Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

•

Stay current on knowledge of federal and commercial healthcare market dynamics and trends.
