Primary Purpose

Works as part of a team in the prevention of fires. Supervises the daily operations in the administration of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. Supervises the Deputy Fire Marshals assigned to the Prevention side of the Wake County Fire Marshal Office. Establishes and manages work objectives for staff. Monitors Inspector's performance and workloads to ensure established performance indicators are met. Assists the Divisional Deputy Director with special projects as needed.

Performs inspections as needed. Supervises the daily operations in the application of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. Acts as a technical advisor to the Deputy Fire Marshals. Provides input to senior leadership on internal policies and procedures. Serves within an on-call rotation to perform or assist in the performance of Fire Cause and Origin investigations.

Documents and measures the performance of the Deputy Fire Marshal staff. Prepares and delivers annual employee performance reviews.

Investigates and mitigates potential issues arising from complaints or the concerns of citizens, business and property owners, contractors, Fire Chiefs, etc. concerning the Division’s administration of the North Caroline Fire Prevention Code.

Conducts frequent team meetings for the purpose of delivering pertinent information and trends pertaining to the administration of the North Carolina Fire Code and Departmental/Divisional policies and procedures.

Ensures Inspector’s credentials remain active through in-field and classroom training, testing and continuing education efforts. Makes hiring and disciplinary decisions in consultation with the Divisional Deputy Director.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science or related field.


Required Experience

•

Eight years of fire services experience.

•

Five years of code enforcement experience.


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record required.

•

NC Fire Inspector Level III Certification.

•

NC Hazardous Materials Operations Level Certification or equivalent as determined by the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal.
