Primary Purpose

Working a rotating 12-hour shift is required. Assist in providing prompt, compassionate, and clinically excellent out of hospital emergency medical care to the sick and injured residents and visitors to Wake County. Responsible for the operation of emergency vehicles, biomedical equipment, and other equipment necessary to provide patient and situational assessment, treatment and transport in an emergency setting. Additionally, responsible for performing routine cleaning and essential maintenance of equipment.

Effectively interacts and communicates with individuals and groups of individuals (patients, the public, members of other agencies and departments) from all education levels, cultural backgrounds, belief structures, and states of health. This is a highly visible position in the community and, as such, Advanced EMS Technicians are required to act with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, and respect and always with the best interest of the patient and the public in mind.

the 90 second standard, in a prompt, compassionate and clinically excellent manner to requests for

service whenever and wherever needed to include all times of day and night and in all types of weather.

Must be able to quickly adapt, problem solve and multi-task in ever changing and sometimes distracting

environments. The physical demands of the job require strength, flexibility and endurance

Safely and respectfully operate an emergency vehicle in emergency mode (lights and sirens) and in nonemergency

mode during all hours of the day and night, in all types of traffic and weather conditions.

Assess nature and extent of illness or injury by obtaining relevant information from the patient, their

family or caretaker(s), bystanders/citizens and from the surrounding environment. Perform advanced

life support skills utilizing liberal standing order protocols to guide patient care in the prehospital

setting. Lift and carry equipment, stretchers and patients to facilitate response to, treatment and

transport of patients. Complete documentation through patient care reporting systems, electronic and

paper-based logs, reporting software and databases. Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive data

at all times, in accordance with HIPAA laws, organizational and department policies and procedures.

While performing patient care utilize equipment and biomedical supplies such as Cardiac

Monitor/Defibrillator, Peripheral Intravenous Catheters, Intraosseous Devices, Pulse Oximeters,

Waveform Capnometers, Sphygmomanometers, Multiple Spinal and Extremity Immobilization Devices,

Multiple Airway Devices, Respirators, CPAP units, Medications, Assorted Bandages, and other Biomedical

Equipment. Utilize additional technology for other job related tasks, such as in-vehicle navigation,

laptop computers, computer aided dispatch, pagers, radios (handheld and truck mounted), cell phones,

online education portals, high-fidelity simulators, etc.

Maintain cleanliness of equipment, vehicles and facilities. Regularly inventory and restock equipment

and vehicles. Decontaminate and disinfect equipment and vehicles after every patient encounter.

From routine to significantly stressful situations and everything in-between, effectively communicate in

a respectful manner, through written, oral and/or visual means, with all individuals and groups of

individuals, regardless of their age, gender, educational level, socioeconomic status, etc.

Work while wearing personal protective equipment such as medical exam gloves, eye protection, etc.

on all requests for service. Specific environments and situations will also need additional personal

protective equipment worn such as fire resistant turnout gear, helmets, work gloves, chemical

protective clothing and respiratory protection.

Performs and participates actively in Continuing Medical Education, Clinical Continuous Quality

Improvement, and other departmental programs, goals and objectives as directed by the supervisory

staff or the Director.

Participate in various department specific committees regarding decisions on protocols, equipment, vehicles, uniforms, etc.

Precept students from paramedic programs locally and nationwide on their clinical rotations


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Maintains knowledge of Wake County EMS System treatment protocols and procedures, and Wake County EMS operating guidelines.

Maintains familiarity with emergency and prehospital medical care by constantly keeping up to date with mandatory paid

continuing education required to maintain certification.

includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
