Primary Purpose

Manages a geographic region of the County for compliance with sanitation regulations by permitted and licensed facilities. Protects the public health by enforcing NC DHHS and Wake County Rules, using tools such as inspections, issuance of permits, citizen complaint response, consultative and follow-up visits, Risk Control Plans, HACCP Verifications, and educational outreach. Acts as subject matter expert and primary trainer for new staff and analyzes training processes to suggest improvements based on individual trainee needs and performance. Facilitates implementation and maintenance of FDA Voluntary Retail Food Program Standards by acting as subject matter expert to a Standard workgroup and participating in Standardization activities.

Acts as subject matter expert and primary trainer for new staff and analyzes training processes to suggest improvements based on individual trainee needs and performance.  Provides verbal and written feedback to EC- Training regarding readiness of new employees for DHHS Authorization and performs remedial training as necessary.

Facilitates implementation and maintenance of FDA Voluntary Retail Program Standards by acting as subject matter expert to a Standard workgroup and participating in Standardization activities, including training staff seeking Standardization and maintaining their own status as a Standardized Officer.

Responds to citizen complaints regarding permitted and licensed facilities.  Conducts investigations of complaints, including foodborne illness investigations.   Works with Communicable Disease staff to investigate foodborne illness outbreaks.  Communicates findings with complainants and with Division leadership as necessary.

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); OR Bachelor's or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences; OR Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in public health


Required Experience

•

Three years of experience in environmental health or related field


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

FDA standardization required within 18 months of hire

•

NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist

•

NCDHHS authorization in Food Lodging Institutions and at least one other authorization

•

Any remaining authorizations relevant to the position required within 12 months of hire

•

Valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record
