Primary Purpose

Oversee the technical operations of the DNA Laboratory. Develop, maintain, and approve DNA technical procedures, training programs, and proficiency tests. Evaluate and approve validations of methods used by the DNA Laboratory. Evaluate and verify the technical qualifications of laboratory personnel performing DNA Laboratory work. Evaluate quality assurance records associated and ensure the DNA Laboratory is in compliance with FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards.

 

 

 

Essential Functions

•

Oversee the technical operations of the DNA Laboratory and ensure the DNA Laboratory meets the FBI Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing and DNA Databasing Laboratories.

Review, evaluate, and approve validation of technical methods and procedures used by the DNA laboratory.

Review and approve the training, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs in the DNA laboratory.

Ensure DNA Analysts and staff have the academic qualifications and necessary training to perform DNA Laboratory work.

•

Develop DNA profiles from evidence, interpret profiles, resolve profile mixtures using probabilistic genotyping software, create notes, author reports documenting laboratory work, review laboratory examinations and enter DNA profiles into the FBI Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management.

 

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Knowledge and Experience

•

Requires deep knowledge of discipline typically obtained through advanced education combined with extensive experience. Typically viewed as having a specialty within a discipline. May have broad knowledge of project management.

Within Medical or Scientific Disciplines, typically requires a doctoral degree and post-doctoral training.


Qualifications


Required Education

•

Master's degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science related area and shall have successfully completed 12 semester or equivalent credit hours from a combination of undergraduate and graduate coursework covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics to include at least one graduate level course registering three or more semester or equivalent credit hours


Required Experience

•

Three years of human DNA (current or previous) experience as a qualified analyst on forensic samples


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Currently or previously qualified analyst in each technology utilized in the laboratory, or have documented training in each technology utilized in the laboratory within one year of appointment

•

Successful completion of the FBI's DNA auditor training course within one year of employment


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted
