Primary Purpose

Responsible for receiving, documenting, storing and maintaining the integrity and security of all items of property and evidence submitted to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Maintains the custody and control of thousands of items of property and evidence. Ensures that property and items of physical evidence acquired by the Sheriff's Office are properly tagged, preserved, stored, and safeguarded. Responsible of monitoring and arranging disposition of each item as soon as possible. Determines and implements the appropriate disposition for all property  and evidence.  Coordinates with local, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies regarding stolen and recovered property and the preservation of evidence.  Assist investigators during search warrants by advising on evidence collected. Coordinates the disposal of narcotics and hazardous chemicals.

Coordinates, manages, organizes, and performs as required all necessary evidence/property control function in the Evidence/Property Department. Logs, records, enters data, generates, and maintains various reports on evidence/property in Department custody or storage.

Dispenses, disposes, and releases propety in an appropriate and legal manner, in accordance with established guidelines of evidence and property. Properly stores and maintains evidence/property in various facilities utilized by the department.

•

Researches case files, microfilm, computerized records, reports, and contacts/interacts with other Department units and agencies in order to facilitate disposal of evidence. Conducts local and LEAD/NCIC computer file searches and queries on weapons and other items of evidence for information; performs FOID background checks on firearm owners prior to transfer and release, conducts ECOURSE, and EWARRANTS.

Researches, analyzes and determines the rightful owner of property, evidence, and found items; provides notification to property owners, schedules appointments, releases of items, and composes written correspondence, as necessary. Communicates with crime victims, family member, and suspects regarding property and evidence matters. Delivers, or arranges for delivery, evidence to crime laboratories for analysis as appropriate, as well as the return of such evidence to Department custody.

Performs audits and inventory on items of evidence/property stored with the Department controlled facility. Prepares inventories of property that is eligible under State Statue for disposal or auction and coordinates with Administration for disposal of said property.

Properly utilizes safe methods in handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Cleans and disinfects storage facility. Maintains adequate supplies of materials and equipment to facilitate all duties related to the Evidence Section.

Displays extensive knowledge of and adheres to Department policies, rules, and regulations and related Federal, State and locals laws. Trains, assists and advises Department personnel in proper evidence procedures, packaging requirement, laws, and case returns. Acts as liaison with other local law enforcement agencies, court personnel, attorneys, labs and other officials.

*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
