Primary Purpose

The Child Protective Services - Assist Social Worker ensures the protection of children who are brought to Child Protective Services (CPS) attention from neighboring counties and other states due to allegations of abuse, neglect, and/or dependency according to North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 7B, state and county policies and Wake County's vision and mission statements.

 

Essential Functions

Conducts planned and unannounced home visits requested from neighboring counties and other states to initiate reports alleging abuse, neglect, and/or dependency (regarding children under the age of 18 years) by interviewing all children considered as victim according to policy, their parents/caretakers within the mandated timeframes (immediate, 24 hours, or 72 hours) to assess the safety and well-being of children

Conducts interviews with nonresident parents and siblings as requested per requesting county or state

Will participate in a consultation with a county attorney regarding petitioning the court for custody of children when parents are not able to demonstrate the ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment, when asked to do so by the referring county

Conducts interviews with collateral contacts (professionals and nonprofessionals) as requested by referring county or state

•

Compiles documentation for all contacts pertaining to a case within 7 days of each contact or sooner based on safety and risk

Submit documents pertaining to information gathered during the assist request into the document management system within 7 days of each contact

Interfaces during meetings (e.g. Child and Family Team (CFT) meetings, Child Planning Conference (CPC, court), Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, family meetings, fictive kin, foster parents, service providers, Departments of Social Services in North Carolina and other states, school systems, court systems, law enforcement agencies, district attorney's office, correctional facilities' staff, and staff within the Child Welfare (CW) division, as requested per requesting county

Additional Responsibilities

•

Interfaces during mandated and required training by the county and state

•

Collaborates with other counties and states to ensure the safety of children when families relocate


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Qualifications


Required Education

•

Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field


Required Experience

•

Two years of job-related experience

•

Completion of the NC Child Welfare Education Collaborative (CWEC) traineeship can be substituted for one year of experience


Required Licenses and Certifications

•

Valid driver's license and "safe" driving record


Qualification Equivalency

•

Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Master's Degree

Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services or Education
