Primary Purpose

Venue Team EMT's assist in providing prompt, compassionate and clinically excellent out of hospital emergency medical care to sick and injured participants at special events and specific venues within Wake County.  They are responsible for the operation of biomedical and other equipment necessary to provide assessment, treatment, and movement of patients in a special event or venue setting.  Additionally, they are responsible for performing routine cleaning/disinfecting, restocking, and basic maintenance of equipment.  Must be able to effectively interact and communicate with individuals and groups of individuals (patients, the public, members of other agencies and departments) from all education levels, cultural backgrounds, belief structures, and states of health. 

Venue Team EMT's are required to act with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, and respect and always with the best interest of the welfare of the patient and the public in mind.  Venue Team EMT's must be affiliated with a county fire department and can hold either an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification. 

This position differs from the EMS Technician position in the following ways.  Venue Team EMT's can only work at special events and specific venues within Wake County.  They cannot staff a 911 response ambulance.

Maintain personal readiness to be able to respond in a prompt, compassionate and clinically excellent manner to requests for service at special events and venues at all times of day and night and in all types of weather.  Must be able to quickly adapt, problem solve and multi-task in ever changing and sometimes distracting environments.  The physical demands of the job require strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Work effectively as an individual and as a team leader on every patient care scene.  Assess nature and extent of illness or injury by obtaining relevant information from the patient, their family or caretaker(s), bystanders/citizens and from the surrounding environment.  Perform basic or advanced (when applicable) life support skills utilizing liberal standing order protocols to guide patient care in the prehospital setting.  Lift and carry equipment, stretchers, and patients to facilitate response to, treatment, and movement of patients.   Complete documentation through patient care reporting systems, electronic and paper-based logs, reporting software and databases.  Maintain confidentiality and always protect sensitive data, in accordance with HIPAA laws, organizational and department policies and procedures.

While assisting with or performing patient care utilize equipment and biomedical supplies such as Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillator, Peripheral Intravenous Catheters, Intraosseous Devices, Pulse Oximeters, Waveform Capnometers, Sphygmomanometers, Multiple Spinal and Extremity Immobilization Devices, Multiple Airway Devices, Respirators, CPAP units, Medications, Assorted Bandages, and other Biomedical Equipment.  Utilize additional technology, while performing non patient care job duties, such as in-vehicle navigation, laptop computers, computer aided dispatch, pagers, radios (handheld and truck mounted), cell phones, online education portals, high-fidelity simulators, etc.

Safely and respectfully operate venue emergency vehicles (carts) at various events, at all hours of the day and night, in all weather conditions.  Additionally, must be able to safely operate a cart through pedestrian crowds and across varying terrain.

Maintain cleanliness of equipment, vehicles, and facilities.  Regularly inventory and restock equipment and vehicles.  Decontaminate and disinfect equipment and vehicles after every patient encounter.

Participate in various department specific committees regarding decisions on protocols, equipment, vehicles, uniforms, etc.


*IMPORTANT* In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
